About SPARK Conference
August 5 & 6, 2024 - Riverside Convention Center
The annual CIRM “Summer Program to Accelerate Regenerative Medicine Knowledge” (SPARK) conference hosts more than 110 student scientists from around California to showcase and celebrate findings from their 5 to 10 weeks or longer research experiences in regenerative medicine.
The SPARK program is one of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s (CIRM) many research training programs dedicated to building a diverse and highly skilled workforce to support the burgeoning regenerative medicine economy in California.
CIRM’s paid summer program offers diverse high school students unique opportunities in stem cell research—particularly students who might not otherwise have the chance to take part in internships due to economic constraints. To date, there are 11 active sites throughout California, each with its own eligibility criteria and application process.

Welcome Message from CIRM
We are delighted to welcome you to the 2024 CIRM SPARK Conference at Riverside, where we celebrate the remarkable achievements of this year’s cohort of talented young scientists!
The Summer Program to Accelerate Regenerative medicine Knowledge (SPARK) provides opportunities for California high school students to engage in hands-on training at leading research institutions, where they advance their knowledge in regenerative medicine and make valuable contributions to the field of stem cell biology. Under the guidance of experienced scientists and mentors, students participate in cutting-edge research and explore innovative methodologies.
CIRM’s mission is to accelerate world class science to deliver transformative regenerative medicine treatments in an equitable manner to a diverse California and world. This mission is embodied in the SPARK program, where the next generation of scientists are trained not just in research but also in the patient-centric aspects of science and medicine, enriching the real-world impact of their work. Presenting their research further solidifies the invaluable science communication skills that are essential as a scientist, and SPARK students are well-experienced in sharing their science with the public through their program activities.
This year’s SPARK Conference brings together students in a culminating celebration of their accomplishments and hard work in the lab over the summer. Students will have opportunities to present their research findings, learn from their peers, and receive valuable feedback from experts in the field. The conference also includes several inspiring and thought-provoking presentations from invited speakers. Additionally, a special panel discussion with participants from CIRM’s Bridges and CIRM Scholars programs will share their experiences pursuing further opportunities in the regenerative medicine field.
On behalf of the CIRM team, we would like to thank UC Riverside for organizing and hosting this year’s SPARK Conference. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the mentors and faculty members whose invaluable guidance helped raise the next generation of young scientists.
SPARK students, we applaud your hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm for diving headfirst into a new field. You are the future leaders of science and medicine, and we are confident that you will continue to excel in your achievements. Congratulations on your accomplishments this year and we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
With warm regards,
Daisy Xin, PhD

Welcome Message from Dr. Huinan Liu
Congratulations on finishing your summer research experience in CIRM SPARK programs at campuses across California. We are excited to host you for this two-day event that will enable you to convene with your peers, learn from experts in the field, and receive feedback on the findings of your summer research project. As the Director of STRIDE—the SPARK-funded program hosted by UC Riverside (UCR)—I hope that you will use these two days to move out of your comfort zones—not just as you strive to communicate the implications of your research work to others, but also as you network with this conference’s attendees. Who knows? The peers and faculty who you meet here may become some of your future colleagues. This is true whether your career takes you into academia or along one of the many industry or policy pathways for which stem-cell research provides particularly effective training. Please note that we say career pathways: one of the most notable benefits of stem-cell training is the sheer variety of careers to which it can lead. So, although we are not suggesting that you should take a blasé attitude towards thinking about your future life paths, we do encourage you to think flexibly and keep an eye out for the kinds of challenges that most fascinate you. This conference’s many speakers will point you towards new ways of seeing and thinking about the kinds of research we do and how that research will impact the world. Our hope is that the conversations you have here at SPARK will lead you to envision new modes of “desirable discomfort” for yourselves.
The world’s most pressing health challenges will not be solved by taking the paths that have already been laid out for you to take. It’s by getting out of your comfort zones—and doing so in ways that create new approaches to enduring problems—that you’ll invent the means of addressing those challenges. You’ve already taken the first step this summer in that research lab where you each spent so much time. We’ve convened you at the end of that experience to begin to envision, together, the shape of the future pathways towards which your summer research will lead you.
